Corsair Innovations is developing a novel helmet material Plymouth, MA (July 12, 2018) – Corsair Innovations is pleased to announce that they have won the fourth NFL HeadHealthTECH Challenge for their Fiber Energy Absorbing Material (FEAM). As part of its Play Smart, Play Safe initiative, the NFL is funding companies committed to, “develop new and improved helmets and protective equipment over the next three to five years.” Corsair, a Massachusetts-based company, manufactures a 100% textile impact energy absorbing material that deflects and protects from harmful rotational impacts. FEAM is breathable, washable and can be easily customized. As of the 2018 season, Corsair’s FEAM is currently being used on professional baseball fields in a custom designed cap insert for umpires. “We are grateful that the NFL, Football Research, Inc. and Duke University have recognized the potential of FEAM technology and honored us with the HeadHealthTECH award,” said Sander Reynolds, Corsair Innovations Vice President. “We are committed to supplying protective equipment with technology to make safer helmets and body padding. This HHT award enables us to push FEAM innovation further, ensuring that football players and athletes around the world stay safe while playing sports they love.” Corsair is also pleased to announce that Xenith, a leader in football equipment design and technology, has agreed to collaborate by providing testing and feedback on FEAM equipped football helmets. This partnership will drive quick iteration leading to material improvements. Xenith’s goal, like Corsair’s, is to continue to create better protective gear for athletes. The NFL’s HeadHealth Initiative has pledged $60 million dollars through a series of challenges that are, “structured to stimulate research and innovation, as well as encourage connections with mentors and/or venture capitalists, with a goal of spurring developments in engineering, biomechanics, advanced sensors and material science.” HeadHealthTECH offers up to three challenges annually, dedicating funds to those with the most promising ideas. “Our ultimate goal is to supply materials to helmet makers to provide superior protection from dangerous rotational energies” said William Lyndon, Corsair Innovations President. “Our testing has revealed that FEAM can work on its own in helmets or in combination with other impact absorption materials. We believe FEAM’s versatility will help the NFL achieve one of its HHT goals: To design and optimize more protective helmets tailored to each player position.” About Corsair Innovations: Corsair Innovations was founded in 2013 to commercialize advanced materials technology developed at UMass Dartmouth. With an emphasis on sports safety, the Corsair Innovations team consists of innovators and partners who have a singular mission: Provide advanced materials technology to enable safer and higher performance sporting equipment. Corsair’s FEAM is a 100% textile material whose impact energy absorption response can be customized or “tuned” to individual helmet types. Currently being used to develop soccer headgear by Reovo, FEAM can also be adapted to hundreds of other helmet and protective equipment applications in sports, military, industrial and medical.
